The BELLE McGOWAN is one of the earliest boats that JW mentions in his journal.  He writes the names of the boats Captain and Steward during 1887.  Other entries occur during 1898 with the last entry being on September 3, 1898.

The photo on the left above is dated during the same time period as the repairs mentioned in 1898.  During this time period she was owned by the W. W. O'Neil Boat Yard, note the WW painted on the barge.
