  Steamer DEFENDER    Wreck of Steamer DEFENDER from collection of Monongahela River Buffs

The Steamer DEFENDER docks at Elizabeth Marine Ways on September 3, 1900.  This boat has work on it's cylinder timbers September 21, 1901, and has repair work on October 15, 1904.  

JW writes that on January 3, 1905 the DEFENDER blows up, the photo above right is of the wreckage of that event. JW wrote that 10 men died, this number differs with the number on the photo and given in Way's Towboat Directory.
