This photo, taken approximately 1880, shows the work in progress of replacing the old suspension bridge with the current Smithfield St. Bridge. The current bridge was built above and around the old bridge. The photo also shows the Packet Geneva in the foreground.     This photo of the Packet GENEVA show her on October 7, 1885. She was the flagship of the dedication cermonies for the first lock on the Ohio river, the Davis Island Dam. Photo from S&D Reflector June 1966

In JW's last river related entry in his journals, August 19, 1945,  he notes that he rode the Packet GENEVA as a young boy when he went to Fayette City to work on the John Brown Farm.  Looking at the first page of his journal, Early Years, he writes the year he worked on this farm as 1876, making him 14 years old.  The GENEVA was built in 1871.
