This short video clip shows the Steamers VULCAN and YOUGHIOGHENY at Lock 5 circa 1930.  This clip is part of a movie taken during that time period about the Monongahela Railway with this clip of riverboats describing the competition for the railway.  This complete video is available at the Monongahela River, Railroad and Transportation Museum in Brownsville, PA   724-326-4489.

 

 

The original Lock 5 was located in the Denbo Area and built during 1854 to 1856.

Construction of the "new" Lock 5 was during 1908 into 1909, the dam was located near the town of Brownsville.

These two photos taken during October and November of 1926 are from the collection of Jacob Spencer.  According to David Gratz of the Brownsville Historical Society they are showing the land wall of Lock 5 being extended upstream in the area of a railroad culvert which required a large opening.
