From collection of Warren Houseman   Steamer SLACKWATER EMW

Their were two boats named SLACKWATER, the first built in 1884 and the second named in 1906 after the first was destroyed in a boiler explosion. Both Steamers SLACKWATER were similar in appearance and operated by the U.S. Engineers. The dates of the photos above are unknown and therefore it is unknown of which boat each photos shows.

JW notes the SLACKWATER in his journal during March 1915.
